The UK operates a points-based immigration system managed by the Home Office. Since Brexit, EU citizens require visas for work and long-term residence. Key pathways include the Skilled Worker visa, Global Talent visa, and Innovator Founder visa.
1.UK Immigration System
The UK points-based system assigns points for job offer, salary, English language, and qualifications. Home Office (UKVI) processes applications. 3.Global Talent Visa
For leaders and potential leaders in academia, research, arts, culture, and digital technology. No job offer required. Endorsed by relevant body (Tech Nation, UKRI, Arts Council, etc.). Fast-track to ILR (3 years for exceptional talent). No minimum salary. Full flexibility to work, freelance, or start a business.
4.Innovator Founder Visa
For experienced entrepreneurs establishing innovative businesses. Endorsed by approved body. Business must be innovative, viable, and scalable. Initial 3-year visa, extendable. Leads to ILR after 3 years if business meets milestones. Investment funds must be available. Replaces former Tier 1 Entrepreneur visa.
5.Family Visas
Spouse/partner visa: minimum income GBP 29,000 (increasing). Adequate accommodation. English language A1 (A2 for extension). Valid for 2.5 years, renewable. ILR after 5 years. Parent visa for access to children in UK. Adult dependent relative visa in exceptional circumstances.
6.Indefinite Leave to Remain
ILR grants permanent residence in the UK. Generally requires 5 years continuous lawful residence. Life in the UK test. English language B1. No excessive absences (180 days per year maximum). No unspent criminal convictions. Biometric enrolment. ILR holders can work without restrictions and access public funds.
7.British Citizenship
Naturalisation after 12 months with ILR (or 3 years married to British citizen). Requirements: good character, Life in the UK test, English language B1, intention to continue living in UK. Ceremony and oath of allegiance. British passport issued. Dual citizenship permitted. Right to vote and stand for public office.
8.Post-Brexit Changes
EU citizens now require visas for work in UK. EU Settlement Scheme for those resident before 31 Dec 2020. No more freedom of movement. Same immigration rules apply to EU and non-EU nationals. Youth Mobility Scheme for some EU countries. Recognition of EU qualifications may require additional steps.
